Eventually, freakouts give way to experimentation. And now, based on millions of AI prompt tests from hundreds of worried marketers, we have a decent idea where AI gets its answers. For ChatGPT, Wikipedia is number 1, but getting your new startup listed there can be a challenge. Number 2 on ChatGPT’s source list: Reddit. Before you roll your eyes, Reddit has A LOT going for it that marketers should be paying attention to. Not only is it the number one source for Google AI Overviews and Perplexity AI, its daily active users have skyrocketed into the hundreds of millions. Google’s latest algorithm update and subsequent data purchase from Reddit indicates it will be a key source for them for the foreseeable future. And best of all, it offers free API access. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to build.

The key to any Reddit strategy is to build organically through meaningful, non-promotional contributions to relevant conversations. The trick is finding the conversations where you can make the most impact. That’s where this workflow comes in. 

 
 
Reddit has clearly established itself as a go-to source for AI answer engines. Any content strategy designed to increase visibility in AI tools needs to include Reddit. But many users find Reddit intimidating or unfamiliar, and have trouble knowing where to begin. This workflow surfaces ways you can be useful to your community on Reddit right now, by filtering for high-engagement, low-solution posts added to topical subreddits in the last day or so.

Start building a presence as a helpful, generous thought leader on Reddit, without blatant self-promotion. 

Create a series of direct actions that you can monitor and track improvements to AI inclusion as you go.

 

Open an account on Reddit and brand it (logo, custom username) and head to https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps.

Create a new app. Name it Reddit Opportunity Finder, select Script as its type, put Personal Script in the description box and add http://localhost:8080 as the redirect uri. Leave the rest blank. 

Once you create it, grab your Client ID and Secret from the box and save them. Head to my Read Only spreadsheet template and make a copy.

Go to Extensions > AppsScript and select Run at the top. Accept all permissions and return to the spreadsheet. Enter your ID, Secret, Username, Password and selected Subreddits into their boxes. Go to Reddit Tools and select Run Now.
